“We have no moat …”

Many of the most prominent foundational models, like various of the GPT models by OpenAI, are proprietary and are - depending on use - subscription or paid based on usage. However, open source models are rapidly closing the gap in terms of performance and results - especially for more general purpose applications.

A leaked internal document from Google in 2023 claimed that open source AI will outcompete the incumbent proprietary models (e.g. from Google and OpenAI) over time.
